Scodwell Mellophonium Offered for Sale

Subscriber Chris Borden recently notified The Middle Horn Leader that he was interested in parting with his mellophonium.

The horn was once owned by Tony Scodwell (and photos of the instrument were featured in The Middle Horn Leader issue devoted to the Stan Kenton Mellophonium Band).

You can learn more about this period of the Stan Kenton Orchestra here.

This instrument is not one of the original mellophoniums utilized by the Stand Kenton Orchestra between 1959 and 1963.  Those instruments were returned to the Conn Company and are believed to have been destroyed.

However, this instrument was owned and performed with by Tony Scodwell, a former mellophonium performer with the Kenton Orchestra and noted trumpeter clinician and instrument maker.

Chris disclosed that the instrument he has for sale was purchased directly from Tony and is believe to have been built in the 1970s.

The instrument underwent a thorough restoration at the Musical Instrument Repair Facility in Tennessee.

The horn appears to be in excellent restored condition and comes with a Conn 1 mouthpiece (the size originally issued with this instrument).

You can learn more about the history of the Conn Mellophonium here.
